A few months ago, we wondered, upon reviewing Backrooms Level X, whether we’d reached peak Backrooms. Now we’re asking the same question of the anomaly spotting genre, and with over 2000 games of this type on Steam right now, we reckon it’s not just peaked, but is rolling uncontrollably towards the foothills.

In Storage 8, your nameless character wanders the repeating corridor of a storage facility. As is the fashion, if all appears normal, carry on, notch a point and go again. However, spot something different, either subtle or not-so-subtle, and return the way you came.

Anomalies here vary from a mountain of storage boxes to fallen signs and a chasing demon. The stark white backdrop may be realistic but, like this game’s inspiration, The Exit 8, it’s harsh on the eyes, making it far from relaxing. There are 34 anomalies to discover, and while Storage 8 manages to conjure a somewhat odd atmosphere in places, there’s simply not enough to make it stand out in a super-crowded market. Some background detail, or anything resembling a character arc, might have helped, yet we can’t help think that perhaps we’re just a bit jaded with this type of game.

CONCLUSION

Anomaly spotters have to offer something unique these days, or at least a consistently uncanny ambience. Sadly, Storage 8 does neither.
