Occasionally, a game comes along that draws you in despite its flaws. Becrowned, a Silent Hill-inspired horror romp set across several diverse locations, is hugely atmospheric, with a strong demo that veers from a contemporary campsite to a massive, grimy castle, and more.

But it needs some work, especially its combat. So far, we’ve only used melee weapons, but the protagonist wields the axe in particular as if it’s a railway sleeper. The controls need some smoothing out, too, but these are issues that can, of course, be corrected before release.

The player is Richard Torrance, desperately searching for his wife, having woken up alone at the campsite where they’re enjoying a romantic getaway. Everyone else has gone, too, and it’s not long before all manner of weird stuff is happening, not least a selection of shambling monsters.

There’s promise aplenty, and hopefully the developers will work on the flaws above over the next few months. If they succeed, Becrowned could be a cracker.
